SCHOOL DISTRICT PROFILE

Location:  The Laurens Central School District is located in Otsego County.  Laurens can be found 10 miles directly north of Oneonta, and is very accessible from Interstate 88.  Within one to two hours, one can be in Binghamton, Albany, or Syracuse.  Situated in a beautiful mountainous area, the district is home to the very popular Gilbert Lake State Park and serves students from the communities of Laurens, West Laurens, and Mount Vision.

School and Community Profile:  The school population has remained steady over the past several years with approximately 400 students in grades K-12.  In many ways, the school serves as a community center for the resident, and hosts a wide variety of activities for both its students and community members alike.  Most of the population is employed in nearby Oneonta, with many individuals working at the colleges. Many community members and students take advantage of the benefits of having these institutions of higher learning close by.  Gilbert Lake State Park is a well known tourist attraction.

Special District Features:

  • The majority of high school graduates proceed to colleges and universities with graduation rate consistently above the state average.
  • The district has made AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) as determined by NYS in all academic areas.
  • The participation in extracurricular activities is extremely high.  The district provides a wide variety of athletic teams and cocurricular activities from which students may choose.
  • The district provides an extensive vocal and instrumental music program, and can easily state that it is home to one of the best school marching bands, jazz bands, and competitive winter guard programs in the State of New York.
  • Senior students take courses from Oneonta State and Hartwick College on a regular basis.
  • Every classroom contains at least two computers with Internet access.  In addition, there are three computer labs available daily for classroom use.
  • The school runs a very efficient in-house e-mail system which is available for parents to use in contacting teachers.
  • The district offers the use of an Instant Alert System to notify parents of school closures, delays, emergencies and school activities.
  • The district offers parents the ability to monitor their children(s) breakfast and lunch programs and an on-line payment system for the cafeteria.
  • Parents have full access to student grades through the Parent Portal System of the Power School Student Data Management System.
  • Full day Kindergarten, Art, Music, Foreign Language, and Physical Education are provided at the elementary level.
  • The district fully embraces an inclusionary special education philosophy.
  • High school students are offered two foreign languages.  English and Social Studies, Math and Science classes are scheduled back to back to encourage interdisciplinary activities.  Science classes and labs are scheduled similarly.  The district has committed to a schedule that provides Academic Intervention Services for all students during the school day.
  • The scheduling of elementary classes allows for a ninety (90) minute block of uninterrupted time daily for English Language Arts.
  • The 42-45 teachers participate in staff development opportunities, through both in-house and out of building workshops and conferences.
  • The district has recently completed a building project has added additional classroom space, new science labs, a multipurpose performing arts center, new cafeteria, and gym. In addition, both the high school and elementary libraries have been renovated as well as administrative, guidance and nursing care service areas.  The district houses an School Based Health Zone sponsored by Bassett.
